Healthy blood sugar levels are important for everyone

Keeping blood sugar levels steady is important for everyone, not just people with diabetes. “Controlling blood sugar helps improve your cholesterol and blood pressure,” says Lori Zanini, RD, of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It can also keep your energy levels up throughout the day, improve your mood, and reduce cravings for unhealthy snacks. Zanini offers some tips.

Mix protein and produce
At each meal have some high-fiber carbs with lean protein, healthy fat, and a vegetable. Here's one menu idea: 3 ounces of skinless chicken breast, plus a 1/2 cup whole wheat pasta mixed with zucchini slices, topped with a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese.

Load up on non-starchy veggies
All vegetables are good for you, but non-starchy ones are lower in sugar. Broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, cabbage, squash, and leafy greens are examples.

Have a few nuts
A healthy combination of protein, fat, fiber, and nuts provide fuel for energy and digest slowly. Research shows 2 ounces a day can improve blood sugar and reduce risk of diabetes. Choose unsalted raw or roasted nuts. Don't overdo it, though. Nuts are usually high in calories.
